A Legacy of Discipleship in Russia (April 2026)
In the face of ongoing, long-term hardships across Russia, a quiet but profound spiritual shift is taking place. People are weary of the daily struggles and are looking for something deeper. Throughout the country, there is a growing desire to fast, pray, and seek peace. Even among intellectuals who may not yet fully understand it, there is a tangible leaning toward God. The difficult environment has stripped away self-reliance, breaking down pride and creating a desperate, humble dependence on God.
It is within this fertile ground that Viktor and Mischa (*) are anchoring their ministry on a singular, urgent focus: true discipleship.
Shifting from “Come and See” to “Go and Die”
For years, the modern church model has relied on an “attractive culture”—a strategy of inviting people to “come and see how good it is to be with us.” Viktor and Mischa are radically shifting this paradigm to a discipleship culture. This is a culture where believers openly share their personal relationships with Jesus, support one another through daily vulnerabilities, and actively learn obedience.
The core of this movement revolves around D-Bands (Discipleship Groups). Globally, statistics show that very few church leaders maintain a daily personal devotion with God. Viktor asks a piercing question: How can we expect to make disciples of Jesus if we aren’t behaving like His disciples ourselves? To bridge this gap, their local church, GoodNews Church, has implemented D-Bands for all key leaders, including Pastor Yuri(*). These groups meet every Saturday, both morning and evening, to share insights from their daily devotions, provide mutual accountability, and pray for the people God places in their lives. The impact is stretching far beyond their local walls. Nadia (*), a young woman in their church, is now actively praying for and mentoring her friends from the local orphanage, passing the torch of faith to the next generation.
A Network of Accountable Growth
Viktor’s ministry has expanded across vast geographical distances and denominational lines. Throughout the week, he leads digital and in-person D-Bands connecting leaders throughout the country.
They aren’t just teaching or showing videos; they are training trainers. Every week, leaders meet to track progress using intentional spiritual markers:
- How many days did you spend intentional, quiet time with God?
- What is one specific revelation you received through reading, journaling, and praying?
- Who is on your “Strategic Prayer List”? (Tracking people as they move from friend, to interested, to Bible reader, to disciple maker).
This discipline is what Viktor calls a “stop”, a deliberate pause out of the chaotic stream of busy earthly life to make Jesus the absolute center. Like an athlete training until their movements become second nature, these believers are conditioning their inner spirits through prayer and fasting.
Meeting People Where They Are
True discipleship doesn’t stay inside the church; it overflows into the community. Viktor and Mischa are utilizing everyday hobbies to bridge the gap with non-believers:
The Three-Sentence Outreach: > Viktor connects with strangers by helping a local kayak club or hosting movie and table tennis picnics. He uses a beautifully simple approach:
- “My name is Viktor.” > 2. “What are your hobbies?” > 3. “I like reading the Bible.” From there, he watches their reactions. Recently, this simple introduction sparked a deep spiritual interest in a group of locals. Viktor plans to take them on an excursion to a nearby 17th-century church featuring famous Gospel paintings by Victor Vasnetsov, using cultural history as a natural doorway to share the Gospel.
As they look toward an intense season – including a cross-country church board training in mid-May, a national Harvesters Ministry training in their city this June, and summer mission trips to deep Siberia (Irkutsk, Angarsk, and Vladivostok) – Viktor and Mischa carry the timeless cry of Isaiah 6:8: “Here am I. Send me!” They are not just seeking converts; they are building an army of disciple-makers who will make disciple-makers across Russia.
