Five years ago in Lisbon, Communitas workers David and Daphne Fisher met Sunil, a pastor from India who felt God calling him to be a missionary in Europe. With courage and faith, he moved his family to Portugal under extraordinary circumstances.
Seeing Sunil’s passion for God and ministry, the Fishers stepped in to coach and support him. While fundraising efforts fell short, Sunil’s determination didn’t. He took on a job as an Uber driver to sustain his family, all while continuing his mission work.
Sunil’s ministry began simply—reading Scripture and praying with a few men he met in Lisbon. What he discovered amazed him: thousands of Indians, Pakistanis, and Nepalese live in the areas surrounding Lisbon, many working as agricultural laborers.
After years of faithfully pursuing evangelistic work and wondering why God had brought him to Lisbon, Sunil finally saw the bigger picture. Recently, he launched a church to serve the South Asian immigrant community. With bold faith, he left his job as an Uber driver to devote himself fully to ministry, prayer, and hearing God’s direction. In the first month, three men were baptized, and Sunil now leads weekly worship gatherings, Bible studies, and one-on-one discipleship meetings.
God’s hand is evident, even in unexpected challenges. Sunil recently received a summons to the police station, leaving him anxious and unsure of the reason. Accompanied by a friend for support, he trusted God to guide him. Fortunately, they discovered that it was a case of mistaken identity and they didn’t want him after all. But during their interviews, what seemed like a moment of fear turned into an incredible opportunity: the officers, initially gruff, gladly accepted a small devotional that Sunil offered. What felt like a diversion became a chance for two new lives to encounter the gospel.
