Sometimes, God shows up in the most unexpected ways—but always at the right time.
Jane (all names in this article have been changed for anonymity), one of our partners serving in the Balkans, recently shared a beautiful moment that reminds us of this truth. While volunteering with a Christian support group for families, she met Kay—a new mom from Africa who had grown up in a different faith tradition that left her feeling disconnected and skeptical of religion altogether.
Still, Kay kept coming. Jane comments, “We weren’t sure how she felt about our explicitly Christian content and made sure to let her know that she was welcome in our group regardless of what she believes.” She was joyful, warm, and full of light. Jane describes her as “sunshine in human form.”
But then, Kay disappeared for a few weeks. One morning, as Jane and another leader prayed over the group, Kay walked through the door—smiling but in pain. Her back had been hurting, and life had been overwhelming.
That day, something simple but powerful happened: another parent asked if they could pray for her. Surprised but open, Kay agreed. As the group prayed, tears filled her eyes.
“I can’t believe they prayed for me,” she whispered afterward.
Later, Kay shared that months earlier, after another group meeting, she’d been quietly wondering about prayer. As she got on a bus, a woman sitting next to her turned and asked out of the blue, “Have you ever prayed?” That chance encounter sparked a conversation that’s stayed with her since.
“I believe in God,” Kay said. “I’m just not sure if I believe in Jesus. But I keep meeting the kindest people, and they all believe in Jesus… so maybe one day I will too.”
